Rape victim commits suicide in Pangasinan

Friday, September 12, 2008

(Very deep sigh) This disturbing article in the news caught my attention. trully distressing.

MANILA, Philippines - A 20-year-old woman allegedly raped by her uncle hanged herself in her house in Alaminos City in Pangasinan province Tuesday, a report said Thursday.
Radio dzRH reported that the mother of the victim found her body hanging inside their house Tuesday morning in Quibuar village in Alaminos City.

The mother said the victim told her the rape occurred Sunday, but she could not immediately get home from Metro Manila where she works.

She said the victim identified an uncle, Daniel Padilla, as the culprit. Police arrested Padilla but had to release him as no one filed charges against him.

It is a terrible tragedy what happened to that young woman who had been raped and took her own life, maybe because of tremendous pain and agony that she could not endure anymore, humiliation of what people might say, or fear for not being believed or being blame for the crime; we will never know what the real reason(s) was why she committed suicide. The saddest part about the incident is that the she will not testify nor witness her uncle put behind bars for the rest of his life, who committed such a despicable, sickening and heinous crime.

In addition, to the mother, I couldn’t imagine how painful and heartbreaking to witness your daughter (or someone you love) take her own life, and be unable to help when she was going through such horrendous (emotional) pain. My prayers to the mother and the family of victim that justice will be serve in memory of her demise. I hope that this dreadful incident will wake up the government officials to reach out and educate the citizens to be aware about the environment we live in, and create an organization to provide support for raped or sexually abused the victim(s). Another thing is the Department of Justice should implement tougher laws in punishing rape perpetrators. Perhaps, I am asking too much, but we need to start somewhere and do something, whether big or small, the important thing is we have to make a difference in our society.
